Annie on My Mind is a game-changing YA book from 1992 about two teenage girls whose friendship (formed at an art museum!) blossoms into love. Annie and Liza’s growing relationship is detailed as intricately and beautifully as any relationship I have ever read.
And it has great lines.
“The first day, I stood in the kitchen leaning against the counter watching Annie feed the cats, and I knew I wanted to be able to do that forever: stand in kitchens watching Annie feed cats. Our kitchens. Our cats.”
“The thing about mountains is that you have to keep on climbing them, and that it’s always hard, but there’s a view from the top every time when you finally get there.”
How to Commemorate:
- Go to an art museum.
- Walk around a city for a long time.
- Feed cats.
